The Zimbabwe Council of Churches Heads of Denominations Strategic Retreat 24-27 May 2010 The Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Heads of Denominations and representatives of sister ecumenical organisations, the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, met in Kariba on 24-27 May 2010 to dialogue with the three political parties in the Inclusive Government, Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and the Organ on National Healing Reconciliation and Integration under the theme: “Learn to do good, seek justice, correct oppression, and defend the fatherless. Come let us reason together,” Isaiah 1 : 17,18a(RSV). Appreciating the constructive participation of the three political parties in the inclusive government, Having been updated on the progress of the inclusive government on the socio-economic and political developments, Noting the achievements and challenges they are facing in the implementation of the Global Political Agreement and the efforts they are making in the resolution of the outstanding issues The Zimbabwe Council of Churches calls upon • the three principals to jointly hold rallies in all the ten provinces and speak out against violence and the things that continue to divide the people • the three political parties to respect and implement expeditiously the GPA to the letter and spirit for them to remain credible in the eyes of the nation • the political parties to refrain from any form of intimidation or coercion of the people during the constitutional outreach programme • the outreach groups to act professionally in soliciting for people’s views • the police to execute fully their constitutional duties in the maintenance of peace and protection of life and property during the outreach period • all those that are charged with policy, management, administration and execution of the constitutional making processes to take this onerous task seriously and adhere to their publicised schedules • individuals and institutions to desist from using hate language • the Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration to speedily facilitate a legal framework for National Healing to enable the church and other players to effectively take part We commit ourselves to • mobilise our church membership to participate fully in the constitution making process • put our services and resources towards the successful implementation of the constitution making process and national healing • offer chaplaincy and guidance to the constitution and national healing reconciliation and integration processes • advocate for an independent body to oversee national healing, reconciliation and integration • monitor the outreach and other constitution making processes • to pray to God for the success of the processes that the nation is undertaking
